Kindness: Learning How to Give Without Expectations

Have you ever showed someone kindness or did something to help without receiving a “thank you” afterwards? Maybe the other person unintentionally forgot or they are just a person who doesn’t value gratitude. Eh. Everyone is human.

Being thanked for something feels good, right? Sometimes, if we aren’t careful, we can get in the habit of always expecting a thank you in return or only showing people kindness because you know they’ll return the favor.

Luke 6:35 says, “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.” Showing kindness is about more than receiving a reward or being praised. True kindness means showing someone unconditional love and expecting nothing in return.

We live in a world where people are encouraged to be selfish and not show people kindness for lack of recognition or return. This is a dangerous and foolish way to live. Kindness is a gift. Giving to others without hesitation or reserve is something that Jesus demonstrated fully when he came to Earth and is something that we should be practicing daily.

One of the many qualities of real faith is giving without expecting anything in return. Whether a stranger begs for money or a family member requires financial support, we must freely contribute when we are able to accomplish God's will.

Matthew 7:12: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you”
