Virtual Volunteering Alternatives During the Lockdown
You don’t need me to tell you that this lockdown is awful. Stuck inside. Can’t do much. Some people want to volunteer but, what? Oh, you may not be able to step outside for standard volunteering. Thankfully, there are a few virtual volunteering options available.
If you are looking for the best virtual volunteering opportunities, then I suggest that you contact a local non-profit. Most of these are always on the lookout for volunteers, and I think that many of them will have virtual opportunities available. For example; non-profits will often need help with content creation, a bit of work on their website, and maybe some accountancy from time to time. All of this can be done from the comfort of your own home. Try to look for some of the smaller non-profits here. Many of the ‘big boys’ in the world of non-profit organizations are going to be overwhelmed with volunteer requests, with the smaller ones feeling a bit forgotten. They will love your help!
Alternatively, you can look into running a few free online courses for people. A lot of teachers (or at least those with experience in certain subjects), are starting to put courses together online for people to watch. You can offer your tutoring services for free. You will be surprised at how many people are going to be willing to take you up on that offer. After all, they want their children to have the best possible education, but they can’t really send them to school right now, can they?
If you want something a bit different, then you can help with socialization. People are stuck at home right now. Not all of them are going to be lucky enough to have a friend or family member that they can talk to. It is going to drive them crazy, and can lead to certain mental health issues. So, why not give people a call? Talk to them. Ask them about their day. I am positive that you can find a good number of apps out there that will be full of people wanting a bit of social contact. Alternatively, you could probably just root around social media and see if there is anybody who is making it clear that they are quite lonely. Get in touch with them. Who knows, at the end of the day, you may end up making a friend for life!
